India is taking an important step in the evolution of its financial markets.
In September, state-owned power-sector financier REC Limited is expected to issue India’s first tokenized corporate bond. The pilot is being developed alongside the Reserve Bank of India and the country’s securities-market ecosystem. The issuance is expected to use the RBI’s wholesale central bank digital currency for settlement, while investors will hold the tokenized securities through a DLT-based digital securities wallet. A secondary-market mechanism is expected to follow later in the year.
The significance goes beyond the bond itself.
India is beginning to bring together tokenized securities, digital settlement and distributed-ledger infrastructure within an established financial market. It is an early but meaningful step towards understanding how financial assets could operate in a more programmable and connected environment.
From Digital Finance to Programmable Finance
India has already experienced a major transformation in financial infrastructure. Digital payments have changed how value moves across the country, securities markets have become increasingly electronic, and the RBI’s work on the digital rupee is introducing another layer of digital settlement infrastructure.
Tokenization extends this evolution into the assets themselves.
A tokenized bond can provide a digital representation of ownership while operating through distributed infrastructure. When that security interacts with digital settlement money, parts of the transaction can increasingly be coordinated through software rather than across multiple disconnected processes.
This creates the possibility of programmable financial markets.
Eligibility, transfer, settlement, servicing and other elements of an asset’s lifecycle can potentially be expressed through digital rules. The objective is not to automate everything. It is to identify where programmable infrastructure can make financial markets more efficient, transparent and connected.
The REC initiative provides a practical environment to explore exactly that.
Why REC Matters
REC is an established participant in India’s financial system and a major financier of the country’s power sector. Its board has approved a ₹1.6 lakh crore market borrowing programme for FY2026–27 across various debt instruments.
Its participation therefore connects tokenization directly with an existing capital-market instrument and an important part of India’s infrastructure financing ecosystem.
That is significant because the future of tokenization will not exist separately from traditional finance. It will increasingly develop within existing markets, alongside issuers, investors, regulators, custodians and exchanges.
The opportunity is to make those markets more connected.
The Technology Changes the Asset Lifecycle
The most interesting part of tokenization begins after issuance.
Once a financial asset has a digital representation, software can potentially interact with it throughout its lifecycle.
Ownership can be updated digitally. Settlement can be coordinated with the movement of the security. Eligibility conditions can become part of transaction workflows. Corporate actions can become increasingly programmable. Assets can potentially be mobilized as collateral through digital processes.
As interoperability develops, tokenized assets can also begin interacting with other tokenized assets and forms of digital money.
A bond therefore becomes more than a digitally recorded security.
It can become a programmable financial object capable of interacting with other components of financial infrastructure.
This is where tokenization begins to move from an issuance mechanism towards a broader financial-market architecture.
The Economic Opportunity for India
The opportunity extends well beyond technology.
India’s corporate bond market has expanded substantially over the past decade, with outstanding corporate bonds rising to more than ₹59 lakh crore in FY2026, according to SEBI data. More than ₹9 lakh crore was raised through corporate debt issuance during FY2025–26.
As India continues investing in infrastructure, energy, manufacturing and technology, efficient capital formation becomes increasingly important.
Tokenization can contribute to that evolution by improving how financial assets are structured, accessed, transferred and managed.
Greater transparency can support investor confidence. Programmable settlement can improve operational efficiency. Digital ownership can simplify asset management. Connected infrastructure can support liquidity and new financial applications.
The broader opportunity is therefore about making capital markets more efficient and more connected, helping capital move through the economy with greater flexibility.
From One Bond to Many Asset Classes
The REC bond is only one potential starting point.
As the infrastructure matures, similar models can extend across government securities, funds, private credit, receivables, infrastructure assets, real estate and commodities.
The important development will not be the number of individual assets that become tokenized.
It will be the ability for different asset classes to participate in the same digital financial ecosystem.
A tokenized bond could become collateral.
A tokenized fund could hold tokenized securities.
Tokenized money could settle tokenized assets.
Different institutions could interact with these assets through common standards and infrastructure.
That is where the RWA market begins to evolve from individual tokenized products into connected tokenized markets.
GIFT City and the Broader Indian Ambition
This development also connects with the broader tokenization ambition taking shape in GIFT City. IFSCA has already explored a regulatory approach for tokenization of real-world assets within GIFT IFSC, covering financial securities such as funds, bonds and stocks alongside other asset categories. The framework considers the issuance, custody, trading, clearing and settlement of tokenized assets within a regulated environment.
This creates an interesting pathway for India: initiatives such as REC can demonstrate how tokenized securities, DLT infrastructure and digital settlement can work within the domestic financial system, while GIFT City can help connect India’s emerging RWA capabilities with international financial markets and global capital.
Together, these developments can help India move from individual tokenization initiatives towards a more connected and interoperable RWA market.
The Infrastructure Layer Becomes Critical
As this ecosystem grows, trust becomes fundamental.
Every tokenized asset needs a reliable connection to the real-world institution and economic rights behind it.
Who issued it? What does it represent? What standards govern it? Who can hold it? What evidence supports its status? And how does that information remain reliable as the asset moves across financial environments?
These questions create the next infrastructure challenge for the RWA market.
For Blockmaze, this is where the opportunity sits.
Blockmaze is building infrastructure that connects real-world assets, verified issuers and their digital representations, with mechanisms around issuer verification, authorization, asset standards, registries, proof obligations and governance.
As India moves from individual tokenization initiatives towards a broader ecosystem, this infrastructure can help create the foundations required for assets to be trusted, understood and connected.
What Comes Next
India’s first tokenized corporate bond is therefore more than a new issuance format.
It represents the beginning of a broader transition in which assets, money, ownership and financial processes can increasingly operate through connected digital infrastructure.
The progression will likely be gradual.
One asset creates a use case. Use cases create standards. Standards enable interoperability. Interoperability creates deeper markets. And deeper markets create new opportunities for capital to move across the economy.
India already has the financial institutions, digital infrastructure and market depth to participate meaningfully in this transition.
The next opportunity is to connect those strengths.
The future of India’s tokenized economy will not be defined simply by how many assets move on-chain. It will be defined by how effectively those assets can move, interact and create value within the financial system.
For Blockmaze, that is the opportunity ahead: helping build the trusted infrastructure that allows India’s real-world assets to become part of a more connected, programmable financial economy.
The first tokenized bond is a milestone. What India builds around it could become a real transformation.
